On May 31, 1996, following the surprise visit from Woody Harrelson to Simpsonville Elementary School in Shelby County, the KHGCA hosted a Kentucky Fiber Hemp Conference in Lexington, Kentucky. The invitation-only affair, organized by Executive Director Joe Hickey, brought fiber companies together from across the globe to discuss hemp and new technologies that reduce the costs of cultivating and manufacturing fibre hemp. Woody and approximately 120 others were in attendance, including hemp growers and processors from seven countries.
